What is Spoon Theory?

A Realistic Metaphor for Chronic Illness

Created by Christine Miserandino, Spoon Theory describes the limited energy reserves of living with chronic fatigue and pain.

Healthy people wake up with an unlimited drawer of spoons. They can spend them freely on working, exercising, and socializing.

As a Spoonie, you start your day with a fixed, limited set of spoons—sometimes only 10 or 15. Every single action costs a spoon: showering (2 spoons), cooking a meal (3 spoons), or reading a text (1 spoon).

If you run out of spoons, you exceed your energy threshold and push your body into a crash or flare. Pace helps you visually budget these spoons so you can take control of your day.

Why We Track Spoons

  • Move Less, Rest More Unlike standard trackers that push you to hit step counts, Pace alerts you when it's time to stop and rest.
  • Prevent Post-Exertional Malaise (PEM) Logging your spoons helps you identify the hidden energy drains that trigger delayed symptom crashes.
  • Validate Your Experience Pacing is active healing. Pace quantifies your daily boundaries, confirming that rest is a productive choice.

Who It's For

Designed for the Reality of Chronic Illness

Pace is built specifically for Spoonies—individuals navigating life with energy-limiting chronic conditions. We help you manage the daily struggles that standard fitness apps ignore.

If you live with M.E./CFS, Fibromyalgia, Long Covid, POTS, or other fatigue-inducing conditions, you know that your energy doesn't follow a normal schedule. Pace is designed to support you through the daily challenges of invisible illness:

Breaking the Crash-and-Burn Cycle

Avoid the trap of overexertion on good days that leads to delayed symptom flares (Post-Exertional Malaise). Pace helps you spot when you are exceeding your limits.

Replacing Fitness Guilt with Calm

Traditional apps push you to hit step counts or active minutes. Pace focuses entirely on pacing, validating that rest is a necessary and productive choice.
